Do I have to talk or be on camera in online sessions?

No. Plenty of crew start with camera off and mic muted, just listening and typing in chat - coaches won't put anyone on the spot. Speaking up and switching the camera on happens when (and if) the person is ready. The same applies in person: sitting at the back of a group session and watching is a completely fine way to start.
